How to set it up

  1. Set the morningThe times run through the morning in half-hours, one volunteer each. Change the day and the hours to fit the class, or let two volunteers share a time.
  2. Say wherePut the classroom or the library in “Where”. It shows on the sheet and goes into each volunteer's calendar file.
  3. Send the linkShare it with families and anyone else who has offered to help. Nobody needs an account.
  4. Run it again next week“Make a copy” keeps the same times, so for next week's date, start a new sheet from this template. It takes a minute.

What helps

  • Check what your school asks of volunteers who work one-on-one with children, like a background check, and say so in the description.
  • Half an hour is long enough to hear four or five children and short enough to fit before work.
  • If the same volunteers come every week, a list of people keeps track of who has done what. It needs a free account.
  • A short note in the description on how to help a reader who's stuck saves the teacher explaining it each time.

Something to send with the link

Copy it into a text, an email or the group chat, change what you like, and paste your link at the end.

Questions people ask

Can a volunteer come for more than one half-hour?
Yes. They can pick several times in one go, unless you turn on “One sign-up each”.
Can two volunteers share a time?
Yes. Set “People per time” to 2 before you make it, and each time stays open until two people have signed up.
Do children's names go on the page?
No. Only the volunteers sign up, under their own names. Pages for a school ask whoever makes them to enter adults' names only, and ask everyone to keep medical and personal details out of their notes.
